HONORS BAND / BAND III (1 credit)

750 Grade: 10-12 Duration: Year Prerequisite: Ability to play an instrument and to read music. Audition MAY be required. Co-requisite of Music Theory II.

 

This is a full-year elective course which focuses on the techniques, skills, and musical experiences that are associated with an intermediate to advanced level course in instrumental music. In addition, instruction in music of the wind band repertory and the history of music will be provided. Students who elect this course should have at least intermediate-advanced proficiency on their instrument. Students interested in playing the percussion for this class must see the instructor for an audition. Performances will include playing at athletic events and other school functions. The course is divided into two sections; Marching Band in the Fall and Concert Band in the Spring. Students who are enrolled in Honors Band are required to audition for CMEA Regional Music Festival and CMEA All-State. A strong commitment to participating in public performances is expected of each class member. Proper performance attire required.

 

ASSESSMENT AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA: 30% daily participation, attitude, and behavior (focusing on development and application of music ensemble skills); 50% concert and public performances; 20% written and playing tests. NOTE: students who do not participate in concerts without a valid excuse will fail the course.
